To Love It, You Need To Know It

Given the lack of research on women’s health, it’s not
surprising how many vulva owners can’t identify their own anatomy. The majority
of people photographed for this book didn’t know that we have three holes, the
difference between the labia minora and majora or that the clitoris is shaped
like a wishbone. In fact, most of society still calls the vulva, vagina! And
women aren’t to blame; our cycles, bodies and health have been massively
overlooked.

 

Educating people about their bodies from a young age can
help them understand the normalcy of their anatomy, how it works and break down
the taboos that exist in society. It’s also critical to educate people on
consent as they need to be armed with the correct language as part of
prevention and intervention.

 

That’s why in the creation of Flip Through My Flaps: An
Exploration of the Vulva, we put it out to the CIMS community to create vulva artwork
of the female anatomy to be featured in the book. Here are the submissions:
